Volvo's 2023 Mild Hybrid Powertrains: A Greener Promise for the Canadian Automotive Market

In a significant strategic move, Volvo Canada has proclaimed that all Volvo cars in the 2023 lineup in Canada will be mild-hybrid, hybrid, or electric. This ambitious push complements Volvo's vision of becoming a fully electric car producer by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

Standout models XC90 and XC40 SUVs, in addition to the V60 and V60 Cross Country, are the stars of this lineup, now outfitted with standard mild-hybrid engines. Such advancements are powered by B4, B5, and B6 mild hybrid powertrains, which leverage regenerative braking energy recovery. These developments promise to deliver smoother acceleration, substantial fuel savings, and reduced emissions, reflecting Volvo's commitment to ecological sustainability.

The powerhouses driving this change are the B4, B5, and B6 powertrains. The B4 variant features a 2.0L turbocharged engine with 194 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, boasting fuel economy of 10.0 L/100km in the city, 7.6 L/100km on the highway, and 8.9 L/100km combined. Up next is the B5, also powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine, outputting 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy figures of 10.3/8.2/9.4 L/100km, respectively. Leading the pack is the B6, a 2.0L engine that's both supercharged and turbocharged, commanding 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque and offering fuel economy of 11.1/8.7/10.0 L/100km.

This lineup is designed with all Canadian drivers in mind, ensuring an electrified Volvo vehicle for everyone, irrespective of lifestyle, driving habits, or access to charging facilities. Significantly, for customers with limited charging access, these mild hybrids deliver increased efficiency over the T4, T5, and T6 predecessors without the necessity of being plugged in.

Through these initiatives, Volvo Canada's 2023 commitment to mild hybrid powertrains is setting the bar high for the future of eco-friendly mobility, underlining the brand's dedication to a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
