A look at the differences between hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles

There are many types of electrified vehicles available on the market. You have fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and hybrid vehicles. Electric vehicles like the Volvo XC40 Recharge use an electric motor only, and have no gas engine component. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and hybrid vehicles have a combination of a traditional gasoline engine, an electric motor or motors, and a battery.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles and hybrid vehicles have the advantage of offering a bit more freedom and more peace of mind to their owners. Unlike an electric motor that needs to be charged, hybrid and PHEV vehicles are able to drive with their gas engine they don't have to have a full battery to be driven.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles like the Volvo XC60 Recharge or the Volvo XC90 Recharge have another advantage in that their battery is larger than traditional hybrid vehicles. That means that you could use your electric vehicle on electric power alone. The range will vary from model to model but tends to be between 30 and 60 km. For most owners, that covers their daily commute. That means that you can do most of your daily driving without meeting a single drop of fuel. You do have to charge the battery, however, but this is a lot faster with a PHEV vehicle then with a traditional electric vehicle.

Hybrid vehicles tend to be more affordable, but they cannot be used on electric power alone which means that overall, their fuel consumption tends to be higher.

There are advantages to each technology, and it all depends on your needs. Give us a call today to learn more.
